Learn where the valuations are on seed rounds today versus 5 years ago

Learn where a company needs to be for a seed round today

Free Resource (Video, Article, Pod Cast or Other)
Adult

I've read a few VC blogs lately and the evidence is clear...seed rounds have increased in size and valuation over the past five years.

It depends upon where your company is located, but, across a number of regions, seed rounds have grown from an average of $2 million in 2012 to $4 million today, and an average valuation of $4-$8 million to a valuation today of $10-15 million.

That's great news if you're an entrepreneur raising money today, but there is a catch.  VCs definitely want to see product market fit before the purse strings open on these seed rounds.

So, although there is more money available at the seed level, the requirements for a successful seed round look a lot more like a series A round.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Learn how to use your Knoitall classroom to teach your world

Learn about some of the features we are developing

Learn how to deliver your learning through a feed

Free Resource (Video, Article, Pod Cast or Other)
Pre-teen, Teen, Adult

So, now that you have your own classroom at Knoitall, "What's Next?"

We believe that learning is more engaging to people when it is delivered to them in a live feed.  This includes videos, podcasts, blog posts, and everything in between.

  1. We recommend as a first step that you go through anything that you've created on the internet that has learning outcomes, and organize it in your classroom.  That means youtube videos, slideshare presentations, and articles.  Use the "Publish a Post" link to organize these items.  Simply grab the link, and use the "External Link" option to add the link.  Then, identify the learning outcomes, describe the item, and add it to our taxonomy.  This will organize the item for your audience.
  2. Once you've organized your content, we recommend that you invite others to follow you and your classroom.  Send them a link to your classroom, and they can follow it.  Once they do this, any time you add content to your classroom, it will automatically show up in their individual learning feeds and they will be notified of this fact.

We've launched Knoitall with the fundamental learning feed components in place to support each individual with their own personal learning feed, and with the ability for every person to have their own classroom where they can educated their world.  We hope that we can build a revolution in how people learn by using the learning feed as the foundation for learning.

So, "What's next?"  There are two primary areas where we want to focus our future development efforts.  The first is building out the functionality so that you can list and sell your time.  This means all forms of tutoring, both face-to-face or online, and the ability to sell group classes or lessons.  These offerings will also be delivered to your Knoitall audience through their individual feeds.  We believe this is a compelling way to deliver new learning opportunities to those who have an interest in those types of opportunities.

The second area of focus is on our learning editor for delivering free learning content to your audience.  We want to add a number of features to our editor, including the ability to add audio to your slide shows, draw, and create mathematical formulas through the editor.

I hope you will give us feedback at support@knoitall.com on ways we can improve the experience.

  1. What is a Knoitall Classroom
  2. How Can You Use Your Classroom
  3. How Should You Set it Up

What is a Knoitall Classroom?

Your Knoitall classroom is a place set aside just for you where you can create, save, and store all of your learning opportunities.  These learning opportunities can include all of your learning posts and any learning opportunities you have for sale.

How Do I Use My Classroom?

Once you have created your classroom, others can follow it and they will be notified whenever you add any new content to your classroom.  It's also a place where you can collect payments for any learning opportunities that you may choose to sell through Knoitall.  It's also a place where you can manage your students, including updating class details, canceling a class, or viewing a roster for a class.

Most members of Knoitall use the platform to create and deliver many learning opportunities to their audience.  When someone follows your classroom, anything you add will show up in that person's feed.  But, in addition, they can always jump to your classroom to see all of your listings created over time.

When learning items in your classroom become obsolete, you can delete them.  In this way, you have complete control over the content that is presented in your classroom, as well as who can see it.

How Do I Set Up My Classroom?

When you sign up for Knoitall, we automatically create a classroom for you.  You can get to it by clicking the "My Classroom" link in the nav bar.  When you signed up, you gave your classroom a name.  You can always change the name at any time.  You should choose a name that expresses you, your business, or a topic you want to teach others about.  For example, if you are florist, you may want to name your classroom "Flower-Depot".  The more your name reflects one of our Knoitall topics, the more likely people are to follow you when they are signing up.

It's also a good idea to add an image to your classroom.  For some of us, the image can be YOU.  For others, it may be your business logo, or an image that reflects your passion.  Be creative!

Make sure to provide a descriptive profile for your classroom that tells your followers what they can expect to find, and any other instructions for participating.  You may want to include in your profile any awards that you have received or industry recognitions.  Add pictures to your profile to show others examples of your work.  You can also link to other profiles, like your Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook profiles.

Who Should See My Classroom?

Anyone who has an interest in the topics you cover should be able to follow you.  Make sure to select the topics you cover in your classroom in the "Show Me to People Interested In" field.  Select as many topics from our Knoitall taxonomy as you'd like.  Once you select these topics, anyone signing up for Knoitall who has interests in those topics will be able to follow you as part of their sign up.

How Do I Sell Through My Classroom?

The most important step for selling through Knoitall is linking your bank account to Knoitall through Stripe.  You'll see a payment link in your classroom where you can perform this step.  We use Stripe to manage credit card payments between the buyer and you.  Once a buyer has purchased one of your offerings, Stripe will deposit 95% of the payment directly into your bank account, and the other 5% goes into our account as our sales fee.

Managing My Customers Through My Classroom

We maintain a roster of all of your customers. This can be accessed from within your classroom.  If you have sales in any of your classes or one-on-one sessions, this will appear in your listings.  Click on the sales link and you will be able to see details on each customer that has purchased that listing.

As always, we're here to help you in any way possible.  Simply comment on this post from within your feed and we will receive it and get back to you with our support.

  1. Learn why it's important to teach your audience about your brand values
  2. Learn how to use Knoitall to teach your audience about your brand
Free Resource (Video, Article, Pod Cast or Other)
Adult

Every company has a brand that can be enhanced by educating their audience about the corporate values.  When done well and responsibly, a Company can have a dramatic and positive effect on the views that their current and potential consumers have about the company and its products.

An example of this is SeaWorld, whose brand has been under attack as a result of the documentary, "Blackfish".  But SeaWorld has been a pioneer in marine life rescues and rehabilitation for years.  So SeaWold uses Knoitall to educate its audience on topics surrounding marine biology, veterinary practices, marine rescue tactics, and re-introduction.

REI is a leader in supplying the outdoor enthusiast with the best gear and supplies.  But, a major component of REI's philosophy is to teach its consumers about safe, sustainable outdoor recreation.  REI uses Knoitall to teach its audience about these practices.  In addition to articles and videos on outdoor recreation topics, REI teaches classes around the Country on these topics, from rock climbing to camping to cross-country cycling.  As its consumers learn more about their outdoor passions, they become greater advocates for REI as a brand they can trust.

If you have a business, you should use Knoitall to reach and grow your audience, educating them on the products you offer and on the values you espouse.  Set up your account, organize and aggregate the learning content you have already developed at other locations on the internet, and bring it all into your Knoitall classroom where your audience can learn, engage with you and with the greater community.

Then, consider offering one-to-one advising, or classes that show your organization's expertise in the SKUs you sell.

Educate your world and you will find a greater, more engaged and loyal audience as a result.

  1. Learn the strategies used by individuals and companies to build their brands through Knoitall
  2. Learn how to use free learning posts to elevate your brand positioning and then;
  3. Learn how to monetize the brand you've developed
Free Resource (Video, Article, Pod Cast or Other)

People love to learn.  This desire crosses cultural barriers, age barriers and gender.  Curiosity is a core human trait.  As humans, we tend to form a hierarchy of learning that begins with information gathering through resources like Wikipedia and Youtube, moves to free learning content consumption, like this learning post or other blog articles, and then migrates towards paid learning content, delivered through one-to-one learning, a group class or seminar, or a longer term series of lessons.

Knoitall gives you the opportunity to span this learning hierarchy through our tools.  It all starts with this simple learning post, which allows you the ability to organize your existing learning content across the web by tagging it into our taxonomy and assigning learning outcomes, to creating brand new learning articles directly through Knoitall, like what I'm doing now. We also give you the ability to sell what you know, by packaging your knowledge into one-to-one tutoring, or delivered through a class.

We have companies and individuals that are spanning this learning hierarchy using Knoitall, and, by doing so, they are enhancing their brand image and connecting with their audience in new ways.  Sure, Twitter is great for getting out information, but Knoitall gives you the ability to educate your audience...to go deeper into explaining your core beliefs, and this approach gives your followers a deeper understanding as to what you know, both individually or organizationally.

Learning posts are the foundation of this strategy.  They are easy to create, and they are easy to consume.  Most learners want to gather as much free content as possible before they make a commitment to connect in a deeper way, either through an online session or face-to-face.  Smart individuals and organizations understand this, and they use our learning posts as a way to engage their audience and inform them on a consistent basis.  Consistent posts also increase your followers because new members will see your recent posts in their feeds, and may choose to follow you as a result.

Once you have grown your followers through learning posts, it's a logical step for them to buy time from you in whatever form you choose to deliver it.  You have proven to them that you have valuable information to share, and they are willing to pay to go deeper and invest in obtaining that knowledge for themselves.

  1. Learn about our knowledge feed as the foundation for enhancing learning outcomes in people of all ages
  2. Learn our definition for who we see as our market for Knoitall
  3. Learn our product strategy
Free Resource (Video, Article, Pod Cast or Other)

Knoitall is building a knowledge network to expand access to personalized instruction and, we hope, dramatically improve learning outcomes for all learners. We want to prove our hypothesis that learning outcomes can be improved dramatically when learning is delivered in the context of a "learning feed".  Our platform is dynamic. The difference between Knoitall and other social networks is that the content we are driving the user back to is learning-related.

Teachers are our primary stakeholders, but we have a more broad definition of teachers than most.  Bloggers, college students, classroom teachers, business professionals, athletes and musicians can all use Knoitall to teach others.

Our bold vision for success is to become the most valuable 15 minutes in a person's day.  "Log into Knoitall, and in 15 minutes, become a better you".  In doing so, we want to prove the value of personalized learning through a feed as compared to more traditional education models.

As of today, we have built out the learning feed platform using GetStream's feed API, and we have developed the foundation for a learning management platform that can support our goals.  We have developed the learning framework to support over 1,000 learning categories, and users can create their personal learning feed, follow other teachers, and deliver free learning to others.  The foundation of our platform is the learning post, which is a learning creation tool to teach others, or to link to existing learning content. We plan to expand the functionality within this tool over time to support unique requirements within key learning verticals, like science and math, programming, music, art, and others.

Our next step is to build out the functionality to support the sale of both face-to-face and online tutoring through the platform. Once this is accomplished we will launch "in-feed" advertising capabilities.  Collectively, this will allow those who teach others through our platform to build and enhance their personal and professional brand.

Our biggest barrier is funding to support the continued development of the platform and reaching our market such that we can grow virally.
